Definition: A Job Interview is a meeting in which one or more persons asks questions to another person seeking a particular job.

Key Terms:

  1. Calm - Not showing anger, frustration or being nervous
  2. Candidate - The person applying and being interviewed for the job.
  3. First Impression - a person’s thoughts and feelings about you when you meeta person’s thoughts and feelings about you when you meet.
  4. Interview - Meeting with the person fact to face to find out about the person
  5. Interviewer - The person asking the questions.
  6. Investigate - Find answers and information about a topic.
  7. Politely - Answering questions and speaking in a kind, respectful way.
  8. Prepare - Find out information and/or practice responses before.
  9. State Identification - A drivers’ license or other item that proves who you are; birth certificate, passport, etc.

Discussion Points

If a potential employer likes a person’s application, the candidate will be contacted to schedule an interview. There is specific information an interviewer will ask the candidate. Before the interview, the candidate should take steps to prepare for the interview. It is important to make a good first impression.

Preparing for an Interview

  • What does the business or company do?
  • What skills are required to do the job?
  • Be ready to answer the questions
    • “What strengths do you have that make you the right person for the job?”
    • “Why do you want to work here?”
  • Practice your answers several times with another person before the interview
  • Develop A Plan On How You will Get to the Interview
  • Decide if You Want to Tell the Interviewer About Your Disability and the Tools You Will Need to Be Successful

What to Bring

  • At Least Two Copies of Your Resume
  • Notepad and Pen/Pencil
  • Any other piece of information the interviewer may ask you to bring, such as; Driver’s License/State Identification, Application, and References

What to Wear

  • Dress Clothes That:
    • Are Clean
    • Fit Nicely
  • DO NOT WEAR
    • Clothes with Holes
    • Flip Flopes
    • Jeans

The Day of the Interview

  • Arrive 10 Minutes Early
  • Turn Off and Put Away Your Cell Phone
  • Introduce Yourself
  • Shake the Interviewer’s Hand
  • Look the Interviewer In the Eyes

Interview

  • Listen to What the Interviewer is Saying
  • Politely Answer the Interviewer’s Questions with Complete Sentences
  • Answer the Questions Honestly
  • If the Interviewer Asks You a Question that Makes You Angry or Upset, Remain Calm
  • Talk About Your Strengths

After the Interview

  • Say Thank You
  • Shake the Interviewer’s Hand

Activity 1: Story Lines

In a large or small group, choose two students; one will provide an appropriate response about an interview. The next student will provide an inappropriate response about an interview. Feel free to create some more scenarios.

Materials Needed:

Activity 2: Questions

Working in a group or individually, use the information taught above and complete Student Activity Sheet A.

Materials Needed:
  • Students Activity Sheet A
  • writing utensil

Activity 3: Practice Interview

Pretend you are interviewing for a job at a fast food restaurant. Use a complete sentence to provide an inappropriate response and an appropriate response to each question keeping in mind the job will be at a fast food restaurant.

Materials Needed:
  • Student Activity Sheet B
  • writing utensil.

Script Writing and Animation

Script Prompt: In small groups, have the students create an interview. Have students record their scripts using the SiLAS software. Remember to name and save their work. Premiere the movies with the group members at the end of each session.

  • Script sheet for each group
  • Pencil for each student

Lesson Review

Allow students to complete the student lesson review sheet. Discuss answers when finished.

  • Student Lesson Review Sheet - 1 per student
  • Pencil for each student

Directions: Working in a group or individually, use the information above to answer the following questions.

1. What are examples of clothing you could wear to an interview.

2. What is one thing you can do to be sure you arrive at your interview on time?

3. What is one thing you should do when the interview is over?

4. Name a person in your life with who you could practice the interview.

Student Activity Sheet B

Directions: Pretend you are interviewing for a job at a fast food restaurant. Use a complete sentence to provide an inappropriate response and an appropriate response to each question keeping in mind the job will be at a fast food restaurant.

1. What would you say to introduce yourself to the interviewer?

2. Share at least one of your strengths with the interviewer.

3. Give the interviewer with at least one reason he/she should hire you.

4. Provide the interviewer with skills you have that will be helpful on the job.
