Definition: Transportation is the action of taking someone or something from one place to another.
Key Terms:
- Public transportation - A transportation option available to the public, that operates on set fares, routes, and schedules . For example: Bus, train, subway, ferry, light rail.
- Private transportation - A transportation option that is not open to the public, so you can determine your own time and route. For example: Rideshare (Lyft, Uber, etc.), Taxi, School provided transportation, Program provided transportation, Medical transportation.
- Personal transportation - A transportation option that involves transporting yourself, or provided by someone you know. Walking, bike, carpooling, rides from family, friends, neighbors, rides from community caregivers.
- Ridesharing Company - A company that matches passengers with vehicles that can transport them.
Discussion Points
- Travel options fall into 3 categories: Public transportation, private transportation, personal transportation.
- Forms of transportation: Railways, roadways, waterways, airways.
- Do not attempt to cover up body odor by using a lot of perfume or cologne.
- When deciding upon a transportation method, consider all your resources, your needs/preferences, your abilities, and cost involved.
- Remember these travel safety tips:
- Carry a cellphone and charger on you.
- Let someone know when you are leaving and anticipated arrival.
- Have a back up plan in place.
- Plan out and practice ahead of time.
Activity 1: Which Mode of Transportation Is Best For Me?
Pass out copies of Student Activity Sheet A to each student. After discussing the differences between public, private, and personal transportation options and examples, have students complete the travel questionnaire. Next have students complete the modes of transportation chart based on their questionnaire responses. Students should mark yes, if that mode of transportation would work for them, and no if it would not.

Activity 2: Bus Basics
After discussing how to read a bus schedule with class, have students use the sample bus schedule from Student Activity Sheet B to answer the questions independently, or together.

Script Writing and Animation
Script Prompt: Getting from one place to another can sometimes be stressful and difficult. Pair students and have them take turns creating a movie clip about one of the following travel concerns, or create one of their own. Students should brainstorm a solution to the problem, and include it in the video. Remind students to name and record their scripts using SiLAS software, and save the final movie.
