Your student is participating in classroom activities helping them learn appropriate ways to gain attention. We would love for you to keep the discussion going at home!

Definition: Gaining attention means to let someone know that you want them to pay attention to you. Getting someone’s attention is important because it lets them know you are trying to talk to them.

Here are just a few ideas to help get the conversation started:

  • There are appropriate strategies to get someone’s attention. Discuss specific examples of these strategies.
  • There are also phrases you can say to get the attention of others. You can: Say "Excuse me", Tap a person gently on the shoulder, Look at someone.
  • Share your own situations when you had to get someone’s attention and the appropriate strategies you used.
  • Children learn best from example. During the course of normal family activities, remind your child how to appropriately gain attention.

Activity

Draw a picture or write about an appropriate time to seek attention at home. After, talk to your child about the situation they drew and different ways they can appropriately get someone’s attention.
