Goal Setting - Parent 2
Home
Your child is participating in classroom activities focused on setting and writing SMART goals. SMART stands for:
- S is for specific: what would you like to be able to do (in a few words)?
- M is for measurable: how will I know when I have reached my goal?
- A is for attainable: is this a task you could really learn how to do?
- R is for relevant: is this goal meaningful to me (i.e. I really want to be able to do it since all my friends already know how) or not so much(i.e. this is something my mom wants me to do but I am not interested in it).
- T is for time: how long will it take me to learn this or how much time do I need to be able to learn this?
We would love for you to keep the discussion going at home! Here are just a few ideas to help get the conversation started:
- What is goal setting?
- Is there anything you do not know how to do but really want to learn?
- Is there a skill or task you didn’t know how to do, but now you do? How did you learn it or master that?
- Be sure to share a goal that you may have set for yourself at one time and how you then achieved it.
- Goals should be SMART:
- Specific
- Measureable
- Attainable
- Relevant (realistic)
- Time
Activity
Create a goal you would like to work towards outside of school. It might be something such as learning a new skill like basketball or it might be listening better to a parent.
Use the form below to write it out: Specific: Measurable: Attainable: Relevant: Time:
